Windows 10 and 8.1 Firewall - Block All or Some Programs And Services Video Tutorial

Sometimes we do not have a third-party software system where it is easy to filter the programs that we want to grant access to the internet/network to. Windows provides a great firewall, it just needs a bit of extra work to configure what we want. Here we show you how to use the advanced features of the firewall to either block all programs and services (so nothing comes in or goes out) and we also show you how to do it for individual programs.

54. 00:02:53:04 / 00:02:59:98 - for all outbound okay inbound okay we
55. 00:02:57:43 / 00:03:02:88 - have all block okay we did the same

57. 00:03:02:88 / 00:03:10:90 - it new rule okay program or custom okay
58. 00:03:07:56 / 00:03:13:56 - all programs all services make sure you
59. 00:03:10:90 / 00:03:16:68 - check just to make sure once again all
60. 00:03:13:56 / 00:03:21:87 - protocols all or it's okay jus want to
61. 00:03:16:68 / 00:03:23:53 - exclude anything click Next okay block
62. 00:03:21:87 / 00:03:25:12 - the connection
63. 00:03:23:53 / 00:03:29:81 - so we're basically now stopping
64. 00:03:25:12 / 00:03:32:50 - everything that was coming in words okay
65. 00:03:29:81 / 00:03:34:71 - some programs are just waiting here in
66. 00:03:32:50 / 00:03:36:00 - the background listening okay maybe
67. 00:03:34:71 / 00:03:37:44 - they're not sending anything out but
68. 00:03:36:00 / 00:03:41:13 - maybe they're waiting for things to come
69. 00:03:37:44 / 00:03:44:94 - in so you need to block inbound as well
70. 00:03:41:13 / 00:03:48:15 - so block this connection okay once again
71. 00:03:44:94 / 00:03:49:95 - choose for all areas or any one
72. 00:03:48:15 / 00:03:52:98 - particular kind of network setting that
73. 00:03:49:95 / 00:03:57:84 - you're on okay give it a name block all
74. 00:03:52:98 / 00:03:58:29 - again or any other name that doesn't
75. 00:03:57:84 / 00:04:02:19 - really matter
76. 00:03:58:29 / 00:04:06:57 - okay and this way basically all incoming
77. 00:04:02:19 / 00:04:11:97 - connections are also blocked okay we'll
78. 00:04:06:57 / 00:04:17:85 - just now delete that okay and would also
79. 00:04:11:97 / 00:04:21:60 - show you you got us fine okay now we
80. 00:04:17:85 / 00:04:23:97 - have chrome okay Google Chrome's running
81. 00:04:21:60 / 00:04:26:21 - over you or any other program for
82. 00:04:23:97 / 00:04:29:84 - example if you want to block it
83. 00:04:26:22 / 00:04:34:62 - need to find what is the exe file that
84. 00:04:29:85 / 00:04:38:40 - is actually running okay now we'll just
85. 00:04:34:62 / 00:04:39:89 - delete this if I was to have enabled it
86. 00:04:38:39 / 00:04:43:43 - probe would not have work but I'll just
87. 00:04:39:89 / 00:04:46:97 - start from the beginning okay so here we
88. 00:04:43:43 / 00:04:50:31 - are what you need to do is open task
89. 00:04:46:98 / 00:04:53:64 - manager okay passenger just type in task
90. 00:04:50:31 / 00:04:56:61 - and then Tasman Joe should pop up okay
91. 00:04:53:63 / 00:04:59:43 - make sure the program is running okay if
92. 00:04:56:61 / 00:05:01:02 - you really are having issues with it and
93. 00:04:59:43 / 00:05:04:76 - I just unplug it or turn off the
94. 00:05:01:01 / 00:05:08:25 - wireless then kinda like the Wi-Fi and
95. 00:05:04:76 / 00:05:11:78 - then start the program okay now you can
96. 00:05:08:25 / 00:05:15:30 - see it over here okay that's the program
97. 00:05:11:79 / 00:05:16:98 - we want to stop okay we need to find
98. 00:05:15:30 / 00:05:19:91 - where it is so we right clicked on that
99. 00:05:16:98 / 00:05:22:31 - and an open file location' if we look at
100. 00:05:19:91 / 00:05:25:85 - it that's in C Drive Program Files x86
101. 00:05:22:31 / 00:05:29:33 - Google Chrome applications and it's this
102. 00:05:25:86 / 00:05:32:87 - one okay so all we need to do is go back
103. 00:05:29:33 / 00:05:34:67 - to our firewall okay once again okay
104. 00:05:32:87 / 00:05:37:70 - I've bound rules you can do it for
105. 00:05:34:68 / 00:05:39:50 - hidden bound rules as well no rule okay
106. 00:05:37:70 / 00:05:45:56 - this time we'll choose a specific
107. 00:05:39:50 / 00:05:48:36 - program next okay the program path okay
108. 00:05:45:56 / 00:05:50:18 - we've already kind of like set aside
109. 00:05:48:36 / 00:05:53:25 - before so it's automatically just gone
110. 00:05:50:18 / 00:05:55:16 - to that location however generally when
111. 00:05:53:25 / 00:05:57:24 - you start it'll be a totally different
112. 00:05:55:16 / 00:06:04:90 - things so let's assume there's a C Drive
113. 00:05:57:24 / 00:06:10:25 - okay all right program x86 Google Chrome
114. 00:06:04:91 / 00:06:12:66 - application Chrome open that okay so
115. 00:06:10:25 / 00:06:16:68 - we've set the program that we want to
116. 00:06:12:66 / 00:06:21:00 - block okay next okay once again choose
117. 00:06:16:68 / 00:06:25:16 - for what settings you want it okay give
118. 00:06:21:00 / 00:06:27:08 - it a name okay click finish now if you
119. 00:06:25:16 / 00:06:29:21 - remember it as a minute back Google was
120. 00:06:27:08 / 00:06:32:09 - working in chrome let's try it again is
121. 00:06:29:22 / 00:06:34:71 - not working okay and you'd obviously
122. 00:06:32:10 / 00:06:38:46 - want to do it the same for inbound rules
123. 00:06:34:70 / 00:06:39:93 - as well so that has basically shown you
124. 00:06:38:45 / 00:06:43:94 - how to come
125. 00:06:39:93 / 00:06:47:66 - lately shall we say lock down your
126. 00:06:43:94 / 00:06:50:37 - computer if you think windows update or
127. 00:06:47:66 / 00:06:52:40 - others Windows services can get through
128. 00:06:50:37 / 00:06:56:31 - okay
129. 00:06:52:41 / 00:06:58:47 - I'm bound rules let us go back I
130. 00:06:56:31 / 00:07:02:87 - shouldn't have deleted it but no one new
131. 00:06:58:47 / 00:07:05:58 - rule so custom next all programs all
132. 00:07:02:87 / 00:07:08:72 - protocols no exceptions
133. 00:07:05:57 / 00:07:16:12 - lock the connection next all settings
134. 00:07:08:72 / 00:07:20:38 - block all ok finish make a block all is
135. 00:07:16:12 / 00:07:25:70 - enabled ok let's go to Windows Update
136. 00:07:20:38 / 00:07:28:05 - check for updates ok just a few minutes
137. 00:07:25:70 / 00:07:30:08 - back it had that line over there
138. 00:07:28:05 / 00:07:33:50 - saying you know check for updates no
139. 00:07:30:08 / 00:07:35:26 - updates were needed now when it checks
140. 00:07:33:50 / 00:07:40:77 - it'll actually come back with an error
141. 00:07:35:26 / 00:07:42:93 - saying couldn't connect anything ok
142. 00:07:40:76 / 00:07:44:60 - there we go we couldn't get online to
143. 00:07:42:93 / 00:07:48:00 - download so you see so you could
144. 00:07:44:61 / 00:07:53:27 - actually use this to block literally
145. 00:07:48:00 / 00:07:55:50 - every program service on your windows
146. 00:07:53:26 / 00:07:57:44 - box ok
147. 00:07:55:50 / 00:08:00:44 - just a quick little reminder regarding
148. 00:07:57:44 / 00:08:02:63 - Windows Update don't forget as per the
149. 00:08:00:44 / 00:08:08:75 - license terms they want you to kind of
150. 00:08:02:63 / 00:08:11:93 - like update on regular basis I think it
151. 00:08:08:75 / 00:08:15:44 - is depending on the settings if you like
152. 00:08:11:93 / 00:08:18:68 - an enterprise version you can delay for
153. 00:08:15:44 / 00:08:23:49 - 4 months and then a further eight months
154. 00:08:18:68 / 00:08:26:33 - so a maximum of 12 months ok before you
155. 00:08:23:49 / 00:08:28:59 - stop getting any updates so basically if
156. 00:08:26:33 / 00:08:31:88 - you've blocked it for that time and you
157. 00:08:28:58 / 00:08:34:97 - then try to update at that future point
158. 00:08:31:88 / 00:08:37:97 - in time you'll actually have to update
159. 00:08:34:97 / 00:08:41:47 - everything previously first ok so just
160. 00:08:37:97 / 00:08:45:00 - remember those licensing rules and also
161. 00:08:41:47 / 00:08:46:88 - Microsoft's own little system ok
162. 00:08:45:00 / 00:08:50:53 - hopefully this has helped all of you um
163. 00:08:46:88 / 00:08:50:53 - thank you for watching
